Police were called to City Beach today after lifesavers failed to coax a lone swimmer back to shore. The swimmer later came back to shore of his own accord. He was then handcuffed and taken away in a police car. He was later charged with having refused to give his name and address, disorderly conduct by creating a disturbance on the beach; and resisting arrest. He will appear in Perth Police Court on Monday. |
Beachgoers became concerned when the man swam almost a half a mile out to sea from the groyne. A lifesaver twice went out to him and returned alone. When the man reached shore, three policemen handcuffed him and drove him away in a police car. Before leaving , they put a yellow sticker on a battered Valiant with South Australian registration plates. |
At Floreat a 14-year-old boy and a 20-year-old youth were pulled from the surf by lifesaver Dick Slattery. They had been swept about 50 yards out by a strong rip. A man was rescued from another rip between City Beach and Floreat. At Trigg, a man about 35 was rescued by a Trigg lifesaver after having been caught in the string rip and swept more than 100 yards out to sea.
